Our 2020 annual conference was postponed until 2021 due to the Covid pandemic. It took place instead online on Saturday March 13th 2021 from 10am to 1pm.

The theme for the conference was “Diversity” and we heard from a number of great speakers about issues such as migrant women’s health, LGBT+ in healthcare, gender roles, religion and race, as well as neurodiversity, biodiversity and ESG investment.

Dr Malihah Mohamad

Dr Mohamad is a Core trainee in general medicine, based at the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald.

She is originally from Malaysia and graduated from Queen's University Belfast.

She is going to speak to us about some of the challenges she has faced in terms of culture and religion - being a Malaysian and a Muslim - while practising medicine in Ireland.

Dr Aisyah Zubaidi

Dr Aisyah Zubaidi is currently working as a senior house officer in Medicine in Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast. She is from Malaysia and had completed her medical studies in Leicester under the Terengganu Foundation full scholarship award. She is an aspiring ophthalmologist and is a keen volunteer for the Royal National Institute of the Blind (RNIB).

She moved to Belfast to live with her husband, who is also a doctor, and is now a mother to an 18-month-old boy. She experienced the journey of returning to full time work into a busy ward at the first peak of Covid-19 whilst breastfeeding and caring for herself and her baby with no family support. Her little family of three is now growing stronger than ever in facing the pandemic despite all the challenges.

Dr Aoife Kirk

Dr Aoife Kirk was introduced to the concept of Planetary Health whilst undertaking MPH in London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and is one of the co-founders of Irish Doctors for Environment. She is the international link for IDE through her work with Planetary Health Alliance, Health Care Without Harm and WONCA Working Party on the Environment.


She is passionate about the opportunities a carbon zero future provides for the health of global citizens, teamwork across disciplines, research driven policy and providing safe, efficient healthcare services. Most likely found up a mountain or in cold water in her spare time!

Dr Caroline Munyi

Dr Caroline Munyi is a gender, peace and development specialist. Caroline started her career in Kenya and worked on integrated rural development programmes with funding from Misereor (now Caritas Internationals) with communities in the remote Eastern Kenya. Caroline came to Ireland and did a BA in Development Studies in Kimmage Development Studies Centre (now part of Maynooth University) then went on to Trinity College where she pursued a Master of Philosophy degree in International Peace Studies and a Ph.D. in the same area but specialised in the area of Masculinities and Violence.

Here in Ireland Caroline has coordinated Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) projects for AkiDwA and ActionAid Ireland. Currently Caroline is the Coordinator of AkiDwA’s Migrant Women Health Programme.

Caroline considers herself a feminist and she believes in looking after herself well to continue the struggle for the emancipation of women and girls globally.

Dr Mary Doherty

Mary is a consultant anaesthetist recently returned to clinical practice after a 6 year career break. She developed a special interest in autism following her child’s diagnosis and she is currently researching the healthcare experiences of the autistic community. She volunteers with AsIAm, Ireland’s National Autism Charity & Advocacy Organisation, and provides autism training for healthcare providers. Her interests include increasing autism understanding & acceptance, improving the healthcare experiences & outcomes for the autistic community and more recently neurodiversity within the medical profession.

Dr Christopher Morrison

Christopher is a Core Medical Trainee in the West of Scotland. He joined GLADD (The Association of LGBT Doctors and Dentists) as a medical student, and has been the organisation’s Co-Chair for 4 years. Through GLADD Christopher is interested in the rights of LGBT health professionals and the care of LGBT patients; he has organised teaching events for professionals on LGBT health topics, been involved in surveys of homophobia and biphobia in the NHS workplace, and worked with partner organisations to improve the experience of LGBT medical students.

Christopher is a member of the BMA’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion advisory group.

Nives Paic

General Manager, IMO Financial Services

Nives has over 20 years’ experience in the financial services sector and is a Qualified Financial Advisor. She joined IMO Financial Services in 2014 where she and her team assist doctors to effectively manage their finances. Prior to joining IMO Financial Services, she was Head of Operations and Associate Director with Harvest Financial Services Ltd., a financial advisory firm.

Eugene Lynch

Eugene is a stay at home dad who lives with his wife, Dr Nóirín Russell, and their three children in Ballincollig Co. Cork. A graduate of Queens University Belfast (B.Sc. Physics & Geology, 1995) and University College Galway M.Sc. Applied Geophysics, 1997), Eugene worked for a Geophysical Consultancy in Johannesburg for five years before returning to Ireland in 2002 to set up his own business. Shortly after his return Eugene met Dr Nóirín Russell and they were married in 2006. In 2012 Nóirín was offered a clinical fellowship in Necker Enfants-Malades so Eugene divested of his business interests and joined his family in Paris. Eugene has been working as a stay at home dad ever since and to his great surprise (and his wife’s delight) has found the role, whilst challenging at times, to be more rewarding than he could ever have imagined.
